In a recent editorial published by edCircuit — a digital platform dedicated to empowering the voices of educators, administrators, educational technology professionals and innovators across both K-12 and higher education — Acceleration Academies CEO Kelli Campbell shares her thoughts on St. Lucie Public Schools’ approach to significantly improving their graduation rate over a 15-year span.
“There is much we can learn from St. Lucie’s solution and the stunning turnaround it fostered. Fifteen years ago, high school graduation rates in the district hovered around 65%. Yet in less than the span of a single generation, the in-cohort graduation rate improved to an impressive 94%. Those numbers have been consistent for years now; 90% or more of its students have graduated in-cohort for a remarkable eight consecutive years,” Kelli said in her editorial titled “Reaching Students Who Drop Out Means Not Ignoring Those Who Age Out.”

St. Lucie Acceleration Academies is part of the school district’s strategic response to not only intervene sooner on at-risk students but also reengage those who have already dropped out, regardless of age.
